GIANT Sunflower!!

Sunflower headerWhat a truly GIGANTIC Sunflower Farmer Mike has grown this year!!

During February half term, which seems like agggges ago now we ran our annual sunflower planting craft where hundreds of you decorated your pots beautifully and carefully planted your seeds to take home and nurture into beautiful flowers.  Farmer Mike, our green fingered gardener did the same and has managed to grow this whopper outside the team room

Our great big flower measures in at 13 feet high which is the biggest ever at Godstone Farm.  Last year our tallest sunflower measured 10 feet so we have smashed our record this year!

Sunflower 29.6.16

The Guinness Book of World Records states the tallest sunflower measures 9.17 meters or 30.1 feet and was grown by Hans-Peter Schiffer in Germany, and was verified on 28 August 2014.  Hans-Peter is a veteran of tall sunflowers, and has held this record twice previously.

Farmer Mike says:

“I am so pleased with how well our sunflower has done this year, we have a way to go to beat the world record but I am confident we can get there.  This year I experimented with a secret ingredient which I have been adding to the soil which has really worked”

When asked what his secret ingredient was, Farmer Mike looked cheeky and muttered “No comment”  He has left us all in wonderment but it seems this gardeners secrets will not be revealed today!!

We would love to see how well your sunflowers are doing, please post your pictures onto the Godstone Farm Facebook Page and we will share them, who knows… yours might be the biggest!
