Continuing our 2025 series of blog posts, exploring our amazing animals and fantastic farm features! Expect a new blog post every fortnight, with the focus on a different letter of the alphabet.
CHICKENS
Did you know that there are over 90 different breeds of chicken that originate in the UK? Ranging from pekin bantams, the smallest breed, to huge brahmas, we’re sure you’ll agree that they are fascinating to watch – not surprising that chickens are the closest living relative to the Tyrannosaurus Rex! At Godstone Farm you’ll be able to spot a variety of chickens, included pekin bantams, silkies, brahmas, orpingtons and warrens. You might even be lucky enough to see them free roaming around the farm.
COWS
Known as one of the traditional farm animals, cows are ruminants, which means that they have four chambers in their stomach. (Remember that fact, it might come in useful during a pub quiz one day!) Ruminants, such as cows, sheep, llamas, alpacas and goats, graze but are unable to digest grasses, foliage and other types of plant material easily. They they use the four chambers in their stomach and regurgitate the food to ensure it’s digested properly. When they regurgitate the food you may see them ‘chewing the cud.’ Because of the essential microorganisms (bacteria) that help these animals to digest their food we have our ruminants double fenced, or on a different level, to avoid direct contact with our visitors. You can purchase animal feed for our ruminants and we ask you to please feed these animals through the fun feeding chutes that you will see see around the farm with ‘FEED ME’ signs. This also helps you to know which of the animals at the farm that the food is suitable for.
Have you met our majestic Highland cows at Godstone Farm? You’ll currently find them in the field next to the main animal barn. They’re long, tough, fluffy hair helps to protect them during tough winter conditions, allowing any rain or snow to slide off, so they’re well suited to this chilly weather. Don’t worry though as when the weather gets a bit warmer, they’ll get their summer coat so they won’t get too hot!
